A unique and unusual excursion that changes the way to see the Perito Moreno Glacier.
The Big Ice tour is one of the many activities that lead visitors to the
Perito Moreno Glacier. The tour revolves around getting deep into the magnificent ice massif. For such purpose, we must be physically fit, have a good management of harnesses and an undoubtedly adventurous spirit. The tour implies a long trek on the ice across several rocky areas. Besides being an exercise for the body, the amazing surrounding scene is a gift for the eyes. We set out at Bajo las Sombras Port very early in the morning on board a boat across the Rico Arm of Lake Argentino. After having sailed for fifteen minutes, we reached the other shore, where the mountain guides were waiting for us. They led us to a site where the crampons are ed. It was there where we began walking to approach the glacier in the southern moraine area and thus reach the spectacular viewpoint. We stopped in front of the huge access to the ice. After fastening our crampons and harnesses, we plunged into the true adventure. This tour gave us the chance to appreciate the glacier from a different perspective. As we moved on, we discovered a new scene: beautiful blue lakes, deep crevices and giant drains and caves.
Being inside the glacier is a magnificent, almost unreal, sensation. The contrast between the white and deep turquoise shades with the majestic ice walls made us lose track of the size of the Perito Moreno, one of the most dazzling glaciers in the world. We went around inside the glacier for over four hours in the company of the guides, who explained to us the different features of the ice and its domain. We stopped to rest and grab a bite. We had to recover our energy. Sitting on that frozen surface, we were amazed at the scene around us. The picture is incredible, almost imaginary. The vast white blanket crossed by vibrating turquoise lines, the iced water lakes and the imposing mountains placed us inside a surrealist image. We will never look at the Perito Moreno with the same eyes again after having experienced this remarkable tour around the heart of the glacier.
