The Queen of Fishermen

Approximately fifty girls from the district take part in a beauty pageant every year in which their physical attraction and personal talents are awarded. The participant that is elected Fishermen Queen will be the referent of the city and the large family of fishermen in the port of Mar del Plata.

Our presence in the Fishermen’s National Festival at the local former Fish Concentration Market enabled us to take part in an exceptional event. This gathering summons thousands of people that taste typical dishes and it all represents a great attraction for locals and tourists alike. The perfect finale for an evening full of thrill is the crowning of the national queen. The jury chooses the winner among the finalists, who walk down the catwalk twice: once wearing an evening dress and a second time wearing a bathing suit.

But for these girls, everything starts long before that. In order to sign up, they must meet a long list of requirements. Then, the participants make a first presentation before a very strict selecting committee. The judges represent the Fishermen Patron Society, the municipal tourist office, Prefectura Naval Marítima and the local fashion designers. In addition, the queen elected the previous year also has a vote.

These ladies experience a triumphal day on which nothing is left to chance, for they have professional assistance during this event. Stress and expectations are evident as they walk in front of the large audience and are interviewed one at a time.

Only twelve of them will make it to the final round, in which the new sovereign is elected. The circle of possibilities provides a new breath of fresh air. They will give their best during the art performance in the final. There is no doubt that his is the longest-awaited festival in the port community.

“Why did I sign up? The most important thing about it is to represent my city and the port, as I belong to a traditionally fishing family. Also, the dream of traveling to other points in the country as a messenger of this activity that may open many doors for me in my professional life”, were the words of the winner when asked by the press representatives who had covered the event.

Thus, the stunning figure of the new queen gradually left behind a night full of glow, music and good vibes. From now on, she will be flattered and will have the responsibility of giving very high prestige to a city like Mar del Plata and its fishing economy. And all this will last for one year.
