The west of the Province of Santa Cruz is ruled by the imposing presence of the Andes Mountain Range, which in turn lodges several lakes and glaciers of matchless beauty. One of the most famous lies towards the north, namely Lake Buenos Aires, with an attractive settlement on its shore: Los Antiguos.
The City of Perito Moreno lies very close to the former. Both districts are well-known for their fine fruit farms and the proximity of cave paintings in the so-called Cueva de las Manos (Cave of the Hands) in the Pinturas River ravine.
A little farther southwards, there are several lakes visited only by fishing and adventure enthusiasts. Large trout, perch and silverside are caught at Lakes Cardiel, Strobel, Belgrano, San Martín and Pueyrredón. The cattle ranches located in the surroundings usually provide lodging and fishing guide service.
The incredible ice massifs that make up the glaciers in Santa Cruz cause a sensation that is hard to put into words. It is only standing in front of them that we can become aware of so much wonder. Land tours, navigation on board luxury cruise ships and even hiking outings will lead visitors to these spectacular attractions.
The City of El Calafate has the privilege to lodge visitors to Los Glaciares National Park and the Perito Moreno Glacier with comfort and elegance. El Chaltén lies a few kilometers away. This small Andean village has been named as the Argentinian Capital of Hiking, as its trails lead to unbelievable ponds and mountains close to Mount Fitz Roy.
El Chaltén is a small village within the Los Glaciares National Park, surrounded by matchless natural beauty, only 220km from the city of El Calafate.
The owners of the local farms have turned every visit into something special, as they show their neat crops and tell stories about the pioneers.
We sailed on board a luxury catamaran to discover the ancient ice enjoying the comfort worthy of demanding passengers.
Reaching this water body does not require a big effort. Visitors just need to be equipped with good footwear, grab their hiking poles and set out. The target is completely worth it.
The Perito Moreno Glacier is famous for letting visitors walk on its surface. The good thing about this experience is that it is not only for expert sportsmen but for all those who dare to do it.
The shores of Lakes Posadas and Pueyrredón are not next to one another but they do share a dazzling natural space where peace and rest are guaranteed.
Cueva de las Manos, Charcamata and Piedra Pintada are part of an archeological corridor providing clear evidence of the presence of indigenous pretehuelches 9,000 years ago.
In the proximity of Los Antiguos, one of the largest lakes in South America offers its charms for us to enjoy its crystal-clear waters and nautical activities.
