When the summer comes, days seem to be endless. That is why, the southernmost city in the world is the perfect location to cycle in the summertime. Cyclers may go on pedalling until sunset.
It was a good idea to go cycling around the most spectacular sites in the City of Ushuaia. Therefore, we resorted to Ushuaia Extremo, where we were given several alternatives. Among them, we chose an urban tour to see the city sights and its surrounding area.
Urban Bike Tours
This kind of outing is available from October through April. It takes from 5 to 6 hours and covers a total distance of 21 kilometers, offering low cycling difficulty but an interesting challenge everyone can face.
The travel agency was the starting point, where we met all the members of the group. We took our bikes and got deep into the southernmost city on the planet in order to discover its mysteries and secrets, and especially its unknown corners.
As it usually happens, the first part of the excursion was a city tour that let us see the emblematic sights of Ushuaia and ended at the famous signpost reading “Ushuaia Fin del Mundo” (Ushuaia World’s End), where we had our group picture taken.
Then we went on pedalling up to Saint Christopher and bordered the bay to enjoy a view unknown for tourists. Some meters away, at the place known as Misión Baja (Low Mission), we learned about the history of an ancient Anglican settlement.
We reached National Route 3 and then headed towards the World’s End Railway Station. For most of us, that was the best part of the itinerary as we could see this small train full of history and appearing on postcards from Argentina. This does definitely not happen everyday.
As the excursion was coming to an end, we had seen Ushuaia from all perspectives. We started our way back to the agency across the highest area of the city. We visited the former base of Andino ski trail and Laguna del Diablo (the Devil’s Lake) and we ended up using the road known as Camino Centenario to return to the city. This outing is full of history and offers visitors the chance to see Ushuaia and its outskirts from a completely different point of view
Other Options To Keep On Pedalling
On our first day, we had heard about the outing known as “Estancia Túnel”. As we asked about it, we were told it consisted in going on an unusual tour outside the National Park that summoned mountain biking enthusiasts along one of the most eye-catching hiking trails in the area. Likewise, it promised a glimpse of the fascinating history treasured by the Island of Tierra del Fuego. We also heard that another popular tour among visitors was “the Martial Glacier”, a classic in Ushuaia featuring one of the best views of the entire city and the Beagle Channel.
Nature lovers will find the beaver lodges are an ideal tour for couples or families. It goes across Valle de Lobos (Valley of Wolves), a Siberian Husky and Alaskan Malamute dog breeding center with an incredible history that, even in the summer, succeeds in making visitors feel the adrenaline of dog-sledding or just hear some account including dogs and men by the brilliant writer called Jack London.
