In an outboard motorboat, guided by experts, it only takes a few minutes to reach
Península Grande (Big Peninsula) opposite the populated area of
Villa Traful. The hike began with a steep slope in a forest of cypress and radal. After walking about three kilometers and reaching high ground from which both Lake Traful and
Laguna Blanca (Lake White) could be seen, we took a break before descending towards the shore of Lake White. We then walked along the coast and, under the watchful eye of our guide, climbed a small rock to enjoy the view of
Laguna Verde (Lake Green). Continuing downhill, we crossed a
pampa where glaciers left a fan-shaped imprint, a reminder of past alluviums. The coast of Lake Verde led us to the creek of the same name, and a rocky ledge, our final destination. The numerous cave paintings were in good condition. Our guide explained the meaning of the drawings which have been studied and decoded by experts. They were made by the
Tehuelche people approximately 600 years ago.
We slowly retraced our steps to the coast of Lake Traful. Although we were tired, we enjoyed the amazing colors of the sky at sunset. Having tested our strength and learned about the past of the region is a truly unforgettable experience. Ever since that moment, whenever we saw the similarity in shape and surface of Lake Green and White, we would know why they are known as "Las Mellizas".
