Quebrada de San Lorenzo

In the subtropical yungas

When visiting Salta, a nearby walk full of green is the Quebrada de San Lorenzo, with trails to discover the splendor of the leafy nature. Following the main street of the town of San Lorenzo and leaving behind the colonial mansions, you access the ravine of the same name, an ecological reserve of mountain jungle, just 2 km from the town and 12 km from the capital of Salta. It can be reached by bus.

The reserve is part of the yungas and Andean forests and the structure corresponds to the eastern slopes of the Andes mountain range. The subtropical yungas make up a site of enormous biodiversity, as well as the missionary jungle, provider of water for the region and unmissable landscapes to travel.

The region has a subtropical mountain climate with dry season in winter. It is warm with high humidity, which characterizes the vegetation of cloud forests, interwoven by streams, ravines and peaks.

The Quebrada de San Lorenzo is a walk to walk and enjoy the surroundings. There are restaurants, bars and artisan stalls. For hikers and more adventurous, there are also trekking circuits of medium low difficulty. The trails cross the transition of the jungle and reach different panoramic points. You can see specimens of tipa, pacará, laurel del cerro, horco molle, lapacho, walnut, ceibo, ferns, cacti, coves, hydrangeas and orchids.

The walk invites you to observe the many birds that inhabit the mountain jungle and fly over the walk of visitors. Mountain turkeys, parrots, woodpeckers, toucans, water blackbird and duck of the torrents are the most abundant.

At the entrance to the reserve is located the Didactic Museum of the Gesta Güemesiana and Gaucha, an opportunity to know the historical heritage of Salta. It is an exhibition of models that tell the libertarian deed of Martín de Güemes, made by an artist from Jujuy.

The town of Salta renewed its tourist bet with many activities to enjoy the charm of the yungas. A useful tip: cloud forest requires mosquito repellent.
