The Streets of Mar de las Pampas

Not only do the sandy streets that go across the woods under the shady canopies lead visitors to their destination but they also encourage them to travel them with the only purpose to relish the surroundings.

At Mar de las Pampas, a map of streets that do not follow the typical chess board format like in other cities unfolds under the protection of acacias, eucalyptus, cypresses and pine trees. The afforested urban area respects the commands of a prodigious green natural scene that accompanies houses and residential areas.

The straight and bendy streets are named after stars and constellations, musicians, sculptures and Argentinian characters that have contributed to this zone and whose actions have transcended the world.

We went along the four avenues that represent the axis of the city: Cruz del Sur (Southern Cross), El Lucero (Bright Star), Del Plata (Silver) and Juan de Garay. The rest of the shorter or longer arteries joins the main ones and challenge visitors to find their way around without getting lost.

Victoria Ocampo, Mercedes Sosa, Carlos Gesell and Lola Mora are some of the names chosen to remember celebrities and learn about their plentiful lives and the works they have left as heritage.

Many of the blocks shaped on the early days of this urbanization process turned out to be too large and have given way to inner cul-de-sacs ideal for a walk. This is another indulgence for those who inhabit Mar de las Pampas: to park their cars in the garage and enjoy physical exercise whenever possible.

This residential village is spotted by sand hills here and there, besides those located on the beach, near the sea. Private houses, cabins and apartment hotels follow the guidelines of this natural nook and thus give shape to this charming village.

The fact that there are no sidewalks at Mar de las Pampas increases the need to slow down, to share its quiet streets and be delighted by the birds’ chirping
